Abstract
A 25 year-old primigravid a woman who had a severe influenza in her second month of pregnancy delivered a male infant with congenital defect of his left forearm.
Her expected date pf confinement was April 17,1960. The pregnancy progresed normally and on January 22,1960, a clinical diagnosis was made.An X-ray of abdomen showed the fetal skull was in right upper quadrant with spine on the mother¢¥s left side. She was admitted with active uterine contractions and bloody mucoid show at 2 p.m. April 8 1960. The cervix admitted two fingers and was not completely effaced. The breech of the fetus could be felt through the cervical os. The fetal heart tones were heard at the left upper quadrant. At 6 p. m., the morning of April 9, the membrane was ruptured spontaneously and a sterile vaginal examination revealed the cervix was dilated approximately 4 fingerbreadth and the umbilical cord with pulsations was prolapsed in the vagina. Cesarian section was not performed because the patient did not wish to be operated upon. Two hours later the cervix was almost completely dilated with the breech and cord. When the after-coming head of the baby arrested by the cervix there was no longer cord pulsating. The baby was pale and waxy, and the extremities hung down without tones. With the definite evidences of fetal death the delivery of the after-coming head was carried out by a craniotomy. The infant was a large male and weighted 2,900 grams. On an examination of the baby the left forearm was found to be defected from the elbow and curious enough a thumb was jointed to the end of the arm. There were neither deformities nor abnormalities in the new born whatsoever, except the defect of his left fore-arm. Autopsy was not performed.
